Signed “A Daniel” Adam Daniel, Crawford County, PA ca 1835
Adam Daniel was working in Crawford County, PA at the time he made this rifle. I could find very little information published on him but several of his rifles are known. He probably learned his trade in the upper Susquehana area as the style is similar to rifles made in that region. It is a superb rifle in original condition signed in script "A Daniel" on the barrel and "AD" on the lock. Barrel is original length 43 inches long. 26 silver inlays all intact and none replaced. A brass comb plate, pierced wear plate on fore arm, and brass sideplate marked No 213. There are no wood losses or replacements and the maple stock has consistent curl. Nice original candy striped ramrod. There is a scratch on behind the cheek piece.
There is no restoration on this rifle. The surface condition of the rifle is excellent; it has never been cleaned or polished. The original patina allows one to see the beauty of the maple.
