Signed "M SHEETZ", Martin Sheetz, Shepherdstown, (now) West Virginia ca 1795

Martin Sheetz learned his trade from his father Philip Sheetz in Shepherdstown where he worked until his death in 1808. This example is typical of his average production with his typical 8 point silver star, silver thumb plate, and incised carving. The 4 petal flower patchbox is often seen on rifles by the Sheetz family in Shepherdstown, namely, his brother Jacob Sheetz. The "London Warranted" lock is original to the rifle and has been reconverted to flintlock.

Signed examples of Sheetz' work is quite rare, Jacob who lived much longer than Martin is more prolific. The rifled barrel is 44.5 inches and about .50 cal. and retains its original length. About 16 inches of forestock has been professionally restored along with 1 ramrod pipe and fore end cap. The rest of the brass mounts are original to the rifle. The rifle retains its original patina; never cleaned. The rarity and desirability of this rifle commands a high price. However, the excellent restoration makes it more reasonably priced.
